Duties The incumbent will serve as the Supervisory Wildlife Biologist - Carnivore Specialist under the direction of the Chief of Terrestrial Wildlife in the Terrestrial Wildlife Branch, within the Resources Management and Science Division in Yosemite National Park.
The incumbent will lead the development and implementation of a science-based ecological management Carnivore Program for terrestrial wildlife.
Duties of the position will focus on using scientifically sound expertise in wildlife biology and ecology to understand the impacts of human-caused climate change and other internal/external threats to park terrestrial wildlife and habitat and to design and implement appropriate management actions to mitigate these threats.
The incumbent will use expertise to: Develop and implement plans for the inventory, monitoring, evaluation, documentation, conservation, research, and interpretation of terrestrial wildlife/habitat across a wide range of elevations including, but not limited to, oak woodland, coniferous forest, riparian, meadow, and alpine habitats.
Implement effective ecologically-based wildlife management practices that include protecting and restoring threatened or endangered species (such as fisher and red fox), minimizing negative human impacts, working closely with fire management personnel to minimize short-term negative impacts while promoting long-term benefits from fire activities, protecting native wildlife from diseases (such as avian influenza), and educating visitors and local communities, through development of management goals and objectives, design of management actions based on these goals and objectives, and implementation of effectiveness monitoring to ensure goals and objectives are met.
Effectively communicate to foster teamwork, internal relationships, and external partnerships that promote wildlife management priorities and landscape scale conservation.
Assist park compliance activities in relation to wildlife and associated habitats, such as NEPA, Threatened and Endangered Species Consultations (section 7), Biological Assessments, Environmental Assessments, and Environmental Impact Statements.

Education: Successful complete of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological science that included: at t least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.
); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR 2.
Combination of Education and Experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.
e.
, at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects,12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
This experience includes but is not limited to the following duties: 1) implement and conduct terrestrial wildlife surveys; 2) capture, immobilize, and handle mammal species; 3) manage, analyze, and interpret data for communicating research results; 4) write funding proposals and prepare reports for terrestrial wildlife.
